Four main types of Marine diesel engine parts supports (from the perspective of structural mechanics)

From the perspective of structural mechanics, supports can be classified into four types of foundations based on different combinations of restraint direction and rotational capacity: ‌

Movable hinge support ‌

Constraint characteristics ‌ : Restricts vertical movement only, allows horizontal sliding and rotation.

Typical application ‌ : Compensating for thermal expansion and contraction at one end of a bridge, such as a simplified model of a plate rubber bearing.

Fixed hinge support ‌

Constraint characteristics ‌ : Restricts horizontal and vertical movement but allows rotation.

Mechanical manifestations ‌ : Generates horizontal and vertical reaction forces, no bending moment transmission, commonly found in articulated nodes of grid structures.

Fixed support ‌

Constraint characteristics ‌ : Completely restrict movement and rotation (three-way constraint).

Engineering significance ‌ : Used in situations where resistance to bending moment is required, such as rigid connections between high-rise buildings and foundations.

Directional support ‌

Constraint characteristics ‌ : Allows sliding in a single horizontal direction, restricts vertical movement and rotation.

Special design ‌ : For structures that require control of displacement in a specific direction, such as sliding supports in long-span Bridges.
